dpa7364157 (dpa) - A view of the entrance to the former concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau with the inscription 'Arbeit mach frei' (work liberates) near the town of Oswiecim, Poland, May 2003. Auschwitz-Birkenau (Auschwitz II) was erected in the winter of 1941/1942 around three kilometres from the first camp Auschwitz I which lies between the Polish cities of Krakow and Kattowitz. The majority of prisoners stayed at Auschwitz-Birkenau. It was a labour and extermination camp. Arriving prisoners in Auschwitz II were 'selected' and those who were found unable to work were sent to the gas chamber and murdered with the poisonous gas Cyclon B. Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops on 27 January 1945. Today the camp accommodates a museum and serves as a memorial place.
